Artificial intelligence and machine learning for medical image diagnosis and therapeutic assistance - How do we shape future medicine?

In this talk, we will talk about applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for medical image diagnosis and therapeutic assistance. Also we will discuss future medicine where artificial intelligence and machine learning will be widely used. AI is currently attracting a lot of interests from various fields. AI and ML technologies is now changing our life styles in both of explicit and implicit meanings. Medicine is also one of big application areas of AI and ML. Automated diagnostic process has been started to be utilized for daily medical tasks. Our research teams have developed many AI and ML-based medical image diagnostic assistance system. One of example is real-time assistance system for super magnified colonoscope. This system enables us to perform real-time cytodiagnosis during colonoscopic examination. Colonic polyps are also identified on colonoscopic video images. These functions are based on ML techniques including SVM and deep convolutional neural network. This system performance is very close to expert colonoscopy doctors and outperforms novice doctors. The system obtained PMDA certificate for commercial production. Furthermore, we have developed laparoscopic navigation systems that assist surgeons during pre- or intra-operative situations. Anatomical structures of a patient are analyzed on laparoscopic videos or pre-operative CT image. Three dimensional information are displayed during laparoscopic surgery according to surgical scenes. The important point is that such systems also gave us some insights on AI and doctors interactions. AI-based real-time diagnosis makes it possible to interaction. Communications in hospitals will be not limited to inter-medical doctors. AI will join communications with medical doctors. AI will serve as one of key players in hospitals, who will assist patients and their families, doctors, nurses, and other medical staff. We would like to show some future visions that is based on our current research results.
